Super Sweet Snail Mail

January 24, 2013 by Laura 11 Comments

I love mail. Love it. Getting the mail is one of the highlights of my day. Not sure why…as if I’m expecting a Publisher’s Clearing House letter that says I won a million dollars, but they come to your door so that idea is out. And most anything that I am expecting that is of great value comes by UPS or FedEx. But I still love good old regular mail…a letter from a friend (yes, this sometimes still happens!), a surprise package from a relative, or a holiday card. I guess it’s the idea of endless possibilities of what could be found in my mailbox sent from any number of places around the world.

Even if you don’t particularly like getting the mail, maybe it’s just one more task and never even crossed your mind, but how fun is it when you DO get something unexpected?

This week I decided to be the sender of some super sweet snail mail. A couple weeks ago my darling little niece mailed me these adorable love notes, one for each of us! (Prime example of why I love to get the mail…never expected these!)

Love Notes

I promptly gave her a shout out on Facebook, which she thought was awesome, my sister said, but I thought she deserved some surprise mail in return. I can’t wait to hear what she thinks about this:

Candy Box

While I was at it, I figured it would be fun to send another box of candy to a client of mine thanking her for the recent website project I completed. With a business named Candyland Studio a little box of candy seems quite appropriate, don’t ‘cha think?

Candy Mail

Just think of all the ways you could use this method to make someone’s day! Wal-Mart and other stores usually have a variety of these boxes of candy for $1.00 or less and postage was less than $3.00. If you need some help finding a cute saying to match your candy you can find lots of different sayings on this website.

Your surprise mail doesn’t have to be candy! Did you know you can mail just about anything under 13 ounces with regular postage without having to go to the post office?! Be sure to weigh your items yourself, though, so you don’t get a box returned due to lack of postage. I found that each box of candy I sent weighed just a bit more than what was on the front so I had to add some extra postage. You can find the amount of postage needed on the USPS Postage Calculator.

Here are a few other fun ideas I found:

Birthday in a Bottle

Send a Ball

“13 Ounces or Less Happy Mail” – Pinterest board of ideas

I might try sending something in a recycled water bottle next time. So, now that you have this new world of little-gift-giving opportunity, what kind of fun mail are you going to send?!

This is so cool, Laura. I can’t wait to try this now. (Stupid question – do you weigh it to know how much it needs in stamps?)

I did weigh them, just to be safe. If I remember right, it did need a bit more postage than if I had gone by the weight on the box. Plus, our postal carrier must not have realized I was MAILING them (nevermind that I had the stamps facing out LOL) and left them in the box so I took them to the post office and had them weigh them to make sure I had enough postage, and I did.

For the postage price calculator did you say it was a letter or a large envelope?

I think it has to be considered a package.

I just went to the post office to mail my boxes of candy and was told they were almost $3.00 per box. Did I do something wrong. Just put a mailing label on it right? Thanks
