If you’ve worked with sublimation materials, (especially any you’ve purchased from my shop, Candyland Studio) you’re likely familiar with the reliability and quality of UNISUB products. Recently, however, there has been a significant change to the single-sided UNISUB sublimation material, which I wanted to share with you to keep you informed.
Why the Change?
In October 2024, UW Solutions released a statement explaining that one of their key suppliers, DPI, ceased operations in April 2024. This unexpected development directly impacted the availability of the 1/8” Tempered Hardboard used in creating UNISUB single-sided sublimation blanks. In their communication, UW Solutions shared the following:
“Understanding the importance of maintaining uninterrupted service and supply, our team took swift action to secure an alternative solution. We are pleased to let you know that we have found a replacement material from a reputable supplier. While the new material may appear different in color, we assure you that its performance and quality meet our standards and remain unchanged.”
While the material has undergone a change, UW Solutions assures that the quality and performance have been thoroughly tested and remain consistent with what we’ve come to expect from their products.
Key Differences in the New Material
After conducting my own testing of the new single-sided UNISUB sublimation material, here are the main differences I’ve observed:
- Thickness and Weight: The new material is slightly thicker than the old version but also lighter in weight.
- Color: The material’s base color is lighter than before. However, the white sublimation layer, where your designs are transferred, remains unchanged.
- Texture: The surface feels slightly textured compared to the previous version’s smooth finish.
- Sublimation Performance: Most importantly, the sublimation process and final results appear consistent with the previous material. Colors remain vibrant, and the
- durability of the design meets expectations. I will continue to use my previous settings of 400 degrees Fahrenheit / 60 seconds / medium pressure.
What Does This Mean for Your Projects?
If you’re using UNISUB sublimation materials for projects like sublimation earrings, coasters, or other creative crafts, you can rest assured that the new material still performs well. While the changes in texture and thickness may be noticeable, they don’t impact the overall quality or usability of the product.
Transitioning to the New Material
As I work through my inventory of the older material, I will be transitioning to the new version.
Final Thoughts
Change is always a little daunting, but the new UNISUB sublimation material continues to deliver the reliable results we’ve come to expect. For those who are nervous about making the switch, I encourage you to give it a try and see how it works for your projects. Don’t forget we offer Scrap Packs so you can test for yourself.
