DIY Sweet 16 Backdrop with Foam Board and Sequin Curtains

I wanted a big, fun backdrop for a Sweet 16 party, but I also wanted something lightweight, affordable, and practical enough to reuse later. This easy DIY party backdrop worked perfectly because the basic setup can be used for almost any event. Change the colors, lettering, and decorations, and it could work for a birthday, graduation, shower, photo booth, school event, or team banquet.

For this version, I used foam board as the base, added fabric for the background, and attached lightweight glitter poster board decorations on top. It gave me the height I wanted without needing to build a wood frame, and most of the pieces can be removed and used again.

Supplies I Used for Our Easy DIY Party Backdrop

• Extruded Foam Board – I used two 2′ x 8′ x 2″ boards for this project.
• Washcloth or towel – to wipe down the foam boards and, honestly, your hands too.
• Paint – I used basic satin black acrylic paint.
• Paint brush or small roller
• Curtain Panels
• U Clips – A pack of 100 was a good amount for this project, and I had some left.
• Colored poster board – I found 22″ x 28″ pink and silver glitter poster board at Hobby Lobby for only $0.99 each.
• Cutting tool – scissors, an X-Acto knife, a desktop cutting machine, or a laser cutter.

Start by Planning Your Backdrop Design

I always like to plan my designs digitally before I start cutting or buying too many supplies. I use CorelDRAW, but you can use any graphics program you are comfortable with. You could also sketch it out on paper if that works better for you.

Planning first helped me visualize the finished backdrop, figure out the dimensions, and get a better idea of how much poster board and other supplies I would need.

Use Foam Board for a Lightweight Base

Originally, I planned to buy one full 4′ x 8′ foam board, probably 1″ thick. But I no longer have a truck or trailer, so I went with two 2′ x 8′ boards instead. The store only had 2″ thick boards in stock, so that is what I used.

And yes, we happily squeezed them into my car.

These boards are lightweight, but at 8 feet long they are still a little awkward to move around. I got them down to my workshop in the basement and wiped them down with a damp cloth. They had been stored outside in the lumber area, so they were a bit dirty.

Paint the Foam Boards

Next, I laid the boards flat on a table and painted one side and the edges. Once that dried, I flipped the board over and painted the back side. Then I did the same thing with the second board.

I used almost the entire 8 oz container of paint, and the coverage was great. Since the boards were going to be covered with fabric, the paint did not need to be perfect. I still wanted them to look decent from a distance and from different angles.

Cover the Foam Board with Fabric

Curtain panels worked perfectly for this project. I was a little nervous they might not actually be the size listed, or that they would not stretch and cover the boards well, but I ended up loving them.

I stretched one panel over each board and secured the fabric around the sides with U clips. The clips made this part easy because I did not have to permanently attach the curtains to the foam board.

Cut the Backdrop Decorations

If you have access to a cutting machine, whether that is a desktop cutter or a laser cutter, it will be a big help for a DIY party backdrop like this. That said, you can absolutely cut the pieces by hand with scissors or an X-Acto knife.

Once the poster board pieces were cut, I laid everything out and rearranged the design before attaching anything.

Attach the Pieces with U-Clips

U-clips hold the decorative pieces securely in place.

When the party is over, I can remove the pieces and take the curtain panels off the foam boards, which means I should be able to reuse some, or all, of the supplies for future events.

Finishing the Sweet 16 Backdrop

Once I had all the cardstock pieces in place, I added a pink glitter hat in the corner using the U clips. That little detail helped finish it off without making the backdrop feel too crowded.

This was honestly one of the easier large projects I have made, and I love how it turned out. The foam boards kept it lightweight, the curtains made the background look finished, and the removable pieces make it much more practical than something I would have to throw away after one party.

Tips for Making a Reusable DIY Party Backdrop from Foam Board

• Measure before you buy supplies. Planning the design first helped me figure out how much space I had to fill.
• Paint the edges and the back. Even if the front is covered, the edges and back may still show from certain angles.
• Use clips when you want the backdrop to be reusable. The U clips held the curtain panels in place without making anything permanent.
• Lay everything out before attaching it. It is much easier to adjust the design before the pieces are stuck down.

Can This Backdrop Be Reused?

That was one of my favorite parts of this project. Since the curtain panels and decorations are attached with u-clips, the whole thing is much more reusable than a one-time party backdrop.

After the party, I can remove the glitter poster board pieces, take off the curtains, and keep the foam boards for another event or project. The theme may change next time, but the basic setup can be used again.

How to Customize This DIY Party Backdrop for Other Events

You could easily use this same method for other party themes. Change the curtain color, poster board colors, lettering, and cutout shapes to fit the event.
